This Spring, Save Energy with These Tips

 -Columbus, OH

Businesses can now reduce their energy costs while also implementing more environmentally friendly practices. Even small changes can add up to big savings when your company decides to invest in energy-efficient initiatives. From switching to LED bulbs (and turning them off when not in use) to cleaning the vents to allow smoother airflow, the following measures will help your business save money on operating costs:

  • Use The Off Switch- Businesses that want to save money on electricity should teach their employees to turn off lights and appliances as much as possible. Turn off lights, copy machines, computers, printers, and other electronics when not in use. In a busy office, it's not always possible to turn off computers, but leaving them on overnight when no one is using them is not cost-effective. When turning off the equipment isn't an option, look for energy-efficient electronics and office equipment that can be used with power management and sleep modes.

  • Switch To LED Light Bulbs- Many businesses can save money on energy costs over time by replacing traditional incandescent bulbs with light-emitting diode (LED) or fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs are more expensive upfront, but they last much longer and use significantly less energy than standard bulbs. Motion lighting can also be used to save energy while still providing adequate lighting in less-used areas.

  • HVAC Maintenance- Regularly maintain your HVAC system to ensure its energy-efficient operation. When an HVAC system isn't maintained properly, it may have to work harder to effectively heat and cool your building, not to mention the potential impact on air quality that a malfunctioning HVAC system can have. Replace your air filters on a regular basis, and have your air ducts cleaned to remove any dust or debris that has accumulated. Maintenance of your HVAC system can improve indoor air quality and system efficiency, saving you money on your utility bill.

  • Use Ceiling Fans And Window Screens- If you can avoid using your air conditioning system on cooler days, you'll save money on your energy bills. Ceiling fans can often save money on cooling costs for businesses. Ceiling fans that rotate counter-clockwise circulate cool air, allowing you to raise your thermostat a few degrees while still remaining cool. When the colder months arrive, turn your ceiling fans clockwise to help push warm air downward and combat the chill. You may be able to lower your thermostat and save money on winter heating costs by using this simple yet effective trick.

  • Install A Smart Thermostat- One of the most convenient ways to save on electricity bills and other energy costs is to equip your business with a smart thermostat. Like motion-detecting lights, a smart thermostat has features that limit energy consumption during off-peak hours. When employees leave for the day, your smart thermostat can adjust itself. Smart thermostats make climate control simple, allowing you to focus on more important daily tasks. Some businesses are now conducting energy audits to determine how much energy they are wasting. Energy audits are a great place to start building your energy-conservation plan because they are designed to identify specific focus areas for more effective energy management.
